The most popular of our digital photography classes, our DSLR Jumpstart Deluxe class is ideal for the new camera owner as well as the current owner who is aching for better photos by use of Manual Mode.

In this engaging, hands-on digital camera class, we explain the qualities of excellent photographs and the most important functions on your DSLR camera that a professional photographer uses to achieve these qualities.

This camera class helps you learn how to use your camera’s light meter for creative exposure control, white balance for accurate color, in-depth Auto Focus features for tack-sharp photos, and on-camera flash technique for professional quality fill-lighting.

We demystify your camera for three hours in the morning, take a lunch break and then come back for three more hours in the afternoon. The day offers a thoughtfully paced, six hours of instruction, demos, exercises and answering questions along the way. In this small class, no student is left behind!

As in The Jumpstart Evening Class, we show you how to do the following on your camera:
•    The “Way to Shoot” digital photographs
•    Understand camera operation and interface
•    The best camera menu settings for different subjects
•    How to control exposure in Manual mode
•    The fundamentals to master accurate focus, every time.

•    Observe the quality of light
•    Control white balance for accurate color
•    Set your flash power settings for great results in soft indoor light to strong outdoor sun
•    Compose a photograph

For improved learning, we limit our class size to 6 people.

Please note this workshop teach the DSLR and the DSLM (mirrirless) camera. You need one of these cameras to participate in a class. Please read the sidebar » “What is a DSLR/M?” to determine if you have the right camera for this class.

What is a DSLR and Mirrorless Note:

Digital Single Lens Reflex (or Mirrorless). I teach how to use all cameras in Manual Mode, once you know Manual Mode your camera’s functionality opens up like a lotus flower. Perhaps less flowery, and more to the point, your other creative modes A, S, and P fall neatly into place.

If your lens is interchangeable, you have a DSLR.

The MIrrorless camera is a lot of camera packed into a tiny body. Here you have an electronic viewfinder. These smaller lighter mirrorless cameras sport very dense interfaces, and they are all very different from one another. Almost everyone is intimidated by this user interface costernation.

I know this is going to sound disingenuous, but Nevertheless, IF you can come the the class knowing how to navigate around your mirrorless camera Information/Interface, as a DISTINCT and SEPARATE activity from navigating your Menus/Setup information, THEN you will get a lot more out of the class and your svelte little camera. Don't sweat the funny icons and symbols, I take care of that. I promise. ~TEU

“The DSLR Jumpstart class was perfectly utilized. Tom was very patient and even though my camera was not a classic DSLR (I have the Sony Nex 5n, mirrorless), he was prepared specifically for me with a reference sheet and explanations. Besides that I understand better how to use my camera and take better pictures for my food blog. I highly recommend this class.”
